Introduction to SendCrypt

SendCrypt, a desktop application developed by SIB - Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, empowers users to securely transmit sensitive data. Seamlessly blending user-friendly design with cutting-edge features like GPG encryption and SFTP transfer, SendCrypt ensures robust data protection.

With SendCrypt, you can:

  • Encrypt sensitive data using OpenPGP

  • Sign metadata files with OpenPGP

  • Transfer data securely via SFTP

  • Generate PGP keys

  • Generate SSH keys

The best part? All of these functionalities are fully integrated within SendCrypt, making it entirely independent of external dependencies.

SendCrypt serves as a viable alternative to sett if your project or use case doesn't necessitate data transfer within the SPHN BioMedIT network.

Get started

SendCrypt is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux and can be downloaded from the website: https://sendcrypt.sib.swiss/download.

Account

You can use SendCrypt without an account, or you can create an account for free to get access to the full functionalities of the application.

Even with an account, SendCrypt do not transmit any sensitive data such as GPG keys, SSH keys and any password/passphrase. You remain the full owner of your data.

Install SendCrypt

SendCrypt is available on Mac, Windows and Linux. If you haven’t already downloaded SendCrypt, visit: https://sendcrypt.sib.swiss/download.

Mac

Get SendCrypt on macOS here.

Once downloaded, double-click on the disk image. When prompted, drag SendCrypt to your Applications folder.

Once installed, you are ready to configure SendCrypt.

Windows

The Windows application is a generic installer .exe. Doublick the installer file to install SendCrypt in your existing filesystem. This option is recommanded, as it will enable automatic app updates.


After double clicking on the .exe installer, you will not be prompted with any dialog as the installation process is fully automated. Once installed, the application will automatically start and you will be ready to use it.

After the installation, do not use the .exe installer to start the application but the shortcut on your desktop. The installer should only be used to install the application.

Uninstall on Windows

To uninstall SendCrypt from a Windows computer, go to the settings menu on Windows and select Apps.

From the Add/Remove Programs section, click on the app and select to uninstall.
